Meet Ben Browning, Who, Along With His Team At Unique Projects, Has Developed A Reputation For Building Gardens That Defy The Odds

Headed up by Director Ben Browing, Unique Projects Devon is a dedicated team of professional landscapers committed to creating incredible gardens, often in seemingly impossible places or time-frames.

Ben kindly took time out from his busy schedule to talk to Arbour Landscape Solutions about his career and what it is about the landscape industry that inspires him to go above and beyond the call of duty in every single project he undertakes

Q: What Inspired You To Become A Landscaper?

A: My father, who was an accomplished architect, always stood by the mantra that landscape informs structure. This inspired me to explore how to create beautiful bespoke gardens and installations. Unique Projects evolved from this passion and has become a successful company with a great team. I’m proud to say that we now have a second Director, Tony Goodridge who brings a wealth of horticultural and garden construction experience.

Q: How Long Have You Been In Business?

A: 12 years

Q: Where Did You Train?

A: The school of life

Q: Do you design and build or work with garden designers?

A: Principally the latter - we enjoy the energy and creativity that garden designers bring to a project.

Q: Which award winning Chelsea Flower Show Gardens Inspire You?

A: I love the complexity of Mark Gregory gardens and the vision of Darren Hawkes.

Q: Where do you gain inspiration for your work?

A: By following closely come of the best designers, Landscape Architects, artisans and installers.

Q: Who (or What) Has Had The Biggest Influence On Your Career?

A: My Father

Q: Natural Stone, Porcelain or Reclaimed Stone, Which Is Your Favourite And Why?

A: Out of choice, reclaimed stone, however, we more commonly use natural stone. Most of our work is in heritage gardens or in the surroundings of older properties so contemporary is not our most common request.

Q: How Do You Feel Your Work Transforms Your Customers’ Lives?

A: Landscape always improves one’s surroundings on so many levels (no pun intended). It brings benefits to quality of life. It is an also economic investment in your largest asset. And to see how a garden changes day to day through the seasons is entertainment enough.

Q: What Advice Would You Offer To New Landscapers

A: Be the sponge, follow your dream, listen and collaborate. Don’t be afraid to fail but learn from your mistakes.

Q: Which trade shows do you like to attend?

A: Very few. Futurescape has been good recently, but Chelsea is always the go to.

Q: Which Areas Of the country do you cover.

A: All of the UK and further afield…wherever the challenge awaits that requires the Unique Projects touch.

Q: Are you part of any trade organisations?

A: Yes, The APL, the HTA and in 2025 we shall also be joining BALI
