A Garden on Three Levels

After renovating their end of terrace home and adding a beautiful, cedar clad extension, the clients were ready for a garden makeover to do justice to their property.
The property dates back to the Edwardian period and has a fabulous wrap around garden with large trees and a mature hedge. These were to be retained.
With two active young children, this family truly values their outdoor space and wanted it to be safe and private space. The whole family are very creative and wanted an inspirational and peaceful garden to fire their imaginations and enrich their lives

Challenge
Retaining and Enhancing the Character of the Garden

Some would see this overgrown muddle as having little or no character, however the entire Bark Brick Block team instantly felt the need to embrace the maturity of the garden. Hard landscaping, of course, needed to protect the extensive tree roots. And soft landscaping and planted needed to be able to thrive in the dappled shade cast by the tree canopy.
The main challenge with this garden is that there are multiple routes from the house into the garden. Some of which are via existing steps. The design must feel natural and instinctive from every entrance.
At the time of writing, planting is still to be completed, as is common in landscaping, budget issues towards the end of the project meant that planting needed to be delayed.
From a landscaping point of view, despite challenging weather (everything from downpours to a heatwave) helpful clients ensured that the works ran smoothly throughout.

Solution
Keeping the Pallette Simple

Simple, clean lines with careful choice of materials makes this garden into a neat, manageable but exciting space.
The choice of limestone setts and riven sandstone pavers perfectly mirrors the colours of the silver birch trees. It not only brightens the space but helps to guide the eye upwards to the magnificent tree canopies.
Paving has been expertly cut around the tree trunks, grounding the plants into the landscape as though they have literally grown through the patios and paths.
The 17ft long fence was to be larch, but the clients compromised with a lower priced product in order to stretch their budget as far as possible. Still - the entire garden is a triumph!
