Terraced Garden In Devon

Project Type:

Sloping gardens are always ‘interesting’ to build, but this project involved a massive feat of structural engineering for garden designer Katherine Crouch and landscapers Unique Projects Devon. However, with the biggest challenges come the greatest triumphs. I think you’ll agree that in this case, the results of a whole year’s worth of hard work are truly magnificent.

Brief
A Terraced Garden Nestling On A Devon Hillside

The brief was to install a series of retaining walls and terraces around an existing swimming pool. This required some very complex geo and structural engineering. By completion, around 4,000 tonnes of soil was excavated and repurposed in another part of the garden to create a wildflower meadow.

Challenge
Water Management

Katherine's design really does make the most of the local topography and views but Ben says that there were a few soggy moments as his team brought her vision to life. Working through a cold and wet winter was trying at times.

The south facing site is on a hillside with a very poor soil substructure (green sand + clay) and several natural springs to contend with. But Ben and his team are not easily put off. They found a way to overcome each challenge as it arose. And just look at the results.
