Coastal Garden By Sue Douglas

Project Type: Large Domestic Garden
What a beautiful garden! I'm sure that each and every one of us would love to work in a space like this. Sue Douglas has designed a little piece of heaven on the Scottish coast and it's been brilliantly constructed by The Promised Landscapes.

Brief
A New Build Garden With Spectacular Views

The moment that garden designer Sue Douglas saw this plot she was bowled over by it's potential. The owners - her clients - asked for a low maintenance garden with plenty of room for their sons to play and lots of space for outdoor cooking and entertaining.
At almost 2,500 square metres, this is a good sized garden and the views are to die for. And with it being a newbuild property, the space was a blank canvas for Sue to work her magic on.

Challenge
Sandy Soils and Protected Trees

The only barrier between this garden and the stunningly beautiful waters of the Firth of Forth is a belt of Scots Pine trees that couldn't be disturbed. Other than that there is no fencing or hedging. Only sand dunes.
It wasn't difficult to design a garden with the trees as a backdrop, however the exposed site and very free draining soil meant that planting needed careful consideration.

Solution
A Stunning Garden In Keeping With Its Surroundings

The design for this garden really does 'bed' this contemporary home into it's surroundings. Sue chose a palette of landscaping materials and plants that suits the location and references the house itself to create a gentle transition from inside to out.
Curving paths and features balance out the rectilinear properties of the house and the garden room and invite visitors to explore the whole garden.
Planting is a mixture of native grasses and hardy perennial plants that thrive in the microclimate of this very special garden.
